Using a Cricut EasyPress Mini can feel a little challenging for beginners, and I know this because I was also a beginner once and struggled to use it. Many users feel confused about temperature control and worry about burning their favorite items, which is why I’ll share simple methods for using your EasyPress Mini, so you don’t have to stress about small details.

One thing I noticed is that it lets you create quick projects, even while traveling, and since I love having hot beverages like tea and coffee, I am especially fond of coasters. I made almost 10 coasters the first time I used the EasyPress Mini, and in this guide, I’ll show you how to make coasters step by step.

Things You Need to Create a Coaster

Creating a coaster is easy; however, you’ll need a few items to get started. All of these items are listed below:

  • Infusible ink for ceramic coaster blanks

  • A lint-free cloth

  • Infusible ink pen (black)

  • Cricut EasyPress Mini and a heat mat

  • Laser copy paper

  • Butcher paper

  • Heat-resistant mat

Once you have gathered all the items, you’re good to go to create the best-looking coaster for yourself.

Step 1: Clean the Ceramic Coaster Blank

As you know, you’ll need a coaster blank for the project. Your priority should be to keep the coaster blank clean and free from dust and debris that could affect the final press. Use a clean, lint-free cloth to wipe the coaster surface.

Note: Your coaster must be polymer-coated and Infusible Ink–compatible for proper heat transfer.

Step 2: Draw the Design on the Laser Copy Paper

Many projects with the EasyPress Mini require a Cricut cutting machine to cut the design. However, I like handmade things and appreciate it when others try to make them too. I know not everyone is good at drawing, but you don’t need to be perfect to get started.

However, ensure that your design doesn’t exceed the size of your coaster blank. You can also cut the copy paper to the size of your coaster. Use the Infusible Ink pen to draw the design. I like flowers and hearts for a minimalistic look.

Alternatively, you can use your Cricut cutting machine to draw the design you want on the laser copy paper. The design will transfer in a mirrored direction during pressing.

Step 3: Use the Cricut Heat Guide to Apply Heat

Cricut offers a Heat Guide to help you choose the correct temperature and time. Search for the Cricut Heat Guide online, and choose your base material and heat-resistant material to learn the right temperature and time.

You’ll get clear instructions for preheating, temperature, and press time. Place the design ink-side down, secure it with tape if necessary, and cover it with butcher paper to protect the design and ensure better transfer.

Finally, preheat your Infusible Ink coaster by pressing it with your EasyPress Mini for 5 seconds, keeping the heat press moving. Place the coaster on a heat-resistant mat before preheating. Then apply heat as recommended in the Cricut Heat Guide.

Now, your coaster is ready to use on your desk or workspace.

FAQs

Can I use regular copy paper for coaster transfers?

No, you can’t use regular copy paper to transfer a design onto a coaster. Use laser copy paper and infusible ink pens to draw the design. You also need a protective material, such as butcher paper, for the final transfer.

Why does my design look faded or uneven after pressing?

If your design looks faded after pressing, it can happen when you didn’t preheat your coaster or didn’t mirror your design. Staying in one spot for too long can cause uneven or faded results.

Is butcher paper necessary for this project?

Yes, butcher paper is necessary to prevent bleed-through of infusible ink. It protects the design and keeps it secure, ensuring even heat transfer.

Can I use an inkjet printer instead of drawing with Infusible Ink pens?

No, you can’t use an inkjet printer instead of drawing with infusible ink pens because an Inkjet ink does not work for heat pressing coasters. Infusible ink pens are ideal for that.

Do I need a Cricut cutting machine to make coasters with EasyPress Mini?

You don’t necessarily need a Cricut cutting machine to personalize coasters with an EasyPress Mini. You can design coasters without a cutting machine by using laser copy paper.
